Two Aces in a Week at The Shropshire Golf Centre

10 August 2010

Two Shropshire golfers were celebrating this week as they both achieved the rare feat of hitting a hole-in-one.

Ken Wood and Olive McClements both scored their aces on the 141-yard Par-3 7th hole on The Shropshire Golf Centre’s Silver Course within two days of each other.

Olive’s ace came on the Tuesday when her seven-iron shot pitched on the right of the green before rolling down and into the hole.

She said: “It’s all a bit strange as I was only talking to my sister the night before about golf and I was wondering if I would ever have a hole-in-one, then I get one the following day.”

Just two days later the public pay-and-play centre’s 7th hole was the scene of more joy as Ken watched his eight-iron shot pitch short of the green, roll over the humps protecting the front of the putting surface, take a sharp left turn and vanish into the hole.

Ken’s playing partner Danny Shepherd joked: “It was as if his golf ball had some sort of sat nav system fitted.”

Ken’s ace was an important one too as it secured victory to him and Danny in their game in a match against Telford Golf Club. Ken celebrated by buying everyone playing in the match a post-round whiskey.

The Shropshire, part of Burhill Golf & Leisure, the UK’s leading golf course owner and operator, has become something of an ace hotspot, with no fewer than seven hole-in-ones in the past 18 months.

James Lever, The Shropshire Golf Centre general manager, said: “Hole-in-ones at The Shropshire are like the proverbial London buses, we don’t have one for a while, and then two come along at once. This is the third time we have had two aces within a short period of time, although this is the first time we’ve had them within days of each other.”
